Accelerated Reader (AR), is an online reading comprehension quiz program that motivates children to do more independent reading.
The goal of AR is to have 80-85% comprehension as an average for every book that a child reads. I also use it to test comprehension of stories that are read in class.
There is little value to reading if there is no comprehension!
In first grade, each book that is read is worth 0.5 points. Our goal for each quarter, is to earn 6 points. That means that they have to read at least 12 books. No points are given if they fail an AR quiz. I will assign books to them based on their reading level.
Those students that have reached their goal, will have their name displayed on the AR STARS Honor Roll.
AR is an important part of their reading grade. The following is the grading system for first grade:
6 points: 100% 3.0 points: 50%
5.5 points: 92% 2.5 points: 42%
5.0 points: 83% 2.0 points: 33%
4.5 points: 75% 1.5 points: 25%
4.0 points: 67% 1.0 points: 17%
3.5 points: 58% 0.5 points: 8%
